In ancient China, the Chinese Five Element Method Of Divination was developed using the North Star as its main focus.

The North Star is located high up in the “North” sky, and because it does not move when viewed from Earth, it has been designated as the Emperor.

Furthermore, the stars surrounding this Emperor star was regarded as the Emperor’s servants, and this fortune telling method ultimately came to be known as the Zi Wei Dou Shu.

Utilizing the Zi Wei, or the Purple Emperor Star, and analyzing its relationship with the imaginary stars in the surrounding Purple Palace domain, one’s destiny can be interpreted.

In Feng Shui, the most favorable topography is called the Four Symbols, or the ideal topography for the Taoist Gods, where the “North” is considered to be ideal containing elevated topographical elements such as mountains and hills.

In addition, a traditional Chinese house called the Courtyard is located in the “North”, which is elevated than in the eastern, western or southern parts of the house, and this location is where the master of the house resides.

However, when I visited Bolivia, I realized that this perspective was only relevant in the Northern Hemisphere.  Since Bolivia is in the Southern Hemisphere, you cannot see the North Star.  In the sky above the North Pole, the North Star exists, but in the South Pole, there is no star called the “South Star”.  In place of a “South Star”, the Southern Cross exists.  This is located on the opposite side of the “North Star”.

An hour’s drive from Bolivia’s capital city La Paz amidst the desolate plains is the Tiwanaku ruins.

This is a smaller scale ruin from the period before the Common Era and is associated with the Pre-Incan Period, older than the Inca Civilization.  The entrance to this ruin is on the southeast.  Usually, temple entrances are in the northwest, however, this idea is for temples in the Northern Hemisphere.  In the Southern Hemisphere, things were the opposite, and this was a new discovery for me.

The Turkish ruins incorporate China’s Feng Shui theory, therefore, I thought this perspective was universal around the world.  However, this is not the case for the Southern Hemisphere creating a big difference between the two hemispheres.
